I have many intriguing discussions at work, however this one hit home as one to remember and one that I felt was important enough to share with all of our wonderful audience, great and small. I’m not sure who wouldn’t agree with me here, and if you don’t, then you may consider yourself to be a member of the group of individuals about whom I am speaking. And that is why this is the universal truth. The person who brought this to my attention happens to be a man in his late 40’s, and we certainly wouldn’t agree on a lot of things; ie politics, what to watch on tv or what kind of music to listen to, most thoughts on the meaning of life, etc. However we did come to the same conclusion on this particular issue. This issue is one that transcends most if not all barriers, including age, gender, and maybe even race (but maybe not).
I’m not trying to be mean here, or really shallow or judgmental, but I guess this probably comes across as all three, and I don’t care. But really, if you put yourself in this situation, ’empathize’ if you will, I think you may agree with me.
You are a female (or a male for that matter, but observing a female is what brought this on, so I’ll continue using that example, and also I am a male, therefore objectification of women is inherently part of my natural instincts) that is slightly to embarassingly overweight. You’ve got a couple extra pounds. And that’s ok. But would you go out wearing something that may do a clever job of hiding those few extra pounds, or would you wear something too small? Would you wear something that shows your stomach, attempting to show off your spare tire?
You can throw all this crap about how American culture makes girls think from a young age that they have to look like Barbie, and it’s terrible that I’m coming down on people who are overweight because it’s society’s fault and not their own, and blah blah blah, that isn’t the issue here so don’t even try to pull that on me.
Seriously, why would an overweight individual wear tight clothes? Tight clothes may be the in thing, but that doesn’t mean that it’s for everyone. I’m not really sure what the rational behind it is. Do these people have an unrealistic self image, or do they just not care? If they are dressing for themselves and they don’t care, more power to them, but have some consideration for those around you.
Fair enough, maybe no one wants to see me walk around in a shirt with cutoff sleeves. But you know what, it’s functional, and I don’t really care what people think. Tight clothes on overweight people however are not functional, in fact, what’s the exact opposite word of functional? [Tacos? What?! Those are mine, I made them!] I would imagine it would restrict movement and bloodflow to the extremities, and also puts an unnecessary strain on the fabric, thus decreasing the life of the clothing and perhaps the elasticity of the material.
I’m not a horrible person for writing this, because I just said what you’ve all thought at some point.
